What Makes a Good Story

Hi Storytellers!

I have learned thing one and thing two about telling over these years. Some things translate into teaching as well.

1.People love surprises it makes them laugh, modulate your voice..loud/soft slow/fast VARIETY IS KEY.
2.Laughing people learn more and don't forget what you tell them.
3.Stories usually need three versions of an event no more and no less> three little pigs not two not twelve6.
4.Stories come out of the gate with a picture or very interesting idea work, and will fall flat if nebulous.
5.People need a solid start and solid stop work hardest on those parts mistakes in the middle get overlooked.
6.Know your purpose...there are the AH HA, Show and Tell, How and Why, The Tall Tale, Ghost Stories Moral and Personal Stories. Ask yourself what a reason for them to LISTEN, how will this help them?
7.Logic tells but emotion sells. To to create change you need emotion..stories add that emotion to market your idea
8. Don't think of yourself as the teller of truth...ask that truth flow through your mind as you speak.
9.People of all ages like to participate, give adults something to do to move the story. They will remember the story and you, clap, so...sing, repeat a word or phase it doesn't matter.
10.Remember to tell a story as a gift, know your audience, what did they buy? Self is last clients first.
11.Use words that evoke senses. My story sounds different to each person, since the pictures are in their mind...the tall mountain, steep angles, swallows on the rocky ledge right over there, dark ferns, cool trickling water, the breeze cool on my face, damp with salty sea spray.
12. You are yourself, a work in progress...no story is BAD it can be made better. If your heart is clear ask for feedback it will help you grow...we never judge ourselves correctly, we either think we are more interesting or less interesting. Our audience is the reality check, what did they get from your tale?

People all over the world are the same, don't let anyone tell you about THOSE people, they are indeed us, rejoice and be glad for THEM. Remember to daydream, we are given that "talent" to stay in close touch with our creative self, the world will come and go memories/pictures of the mind will never leave us.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: if you are interviewing for a job tell your employment story. Facts and figures are boring while important but don't dwell on figures. What makes you memorable? The way you tell your work story will help the employer see your unique self. You may be different because you came from Tanzania and had to learn a new culture...let the employer know, it shows you persevere. It could be the job is open because the last person gave up too soon and drove the boss nuts with questions and that part of your story is far more important that your 99% efficiency with excel.
